Statistical Area Level 1 — SA1 — is the smallest standard geography the ABS publishes most demographic data at. It is the building block behind almost everything Scopomap shows you at a local level.
Why the smallest unit wins
Because SA1s are small, they bend around the shapes people actually care about — streets, neighbourhoods, school catchments — far better than a suburb or council boundary.

How we use them
- Profiles are built by aggregating SA1s inside your area.
- Partial overlaps are weighted rather than counted whole.
- The Representation Score measures how well the SA1s fit your boundary.
